While the mere existence of Chris Brown and Justin Bieber is enough to throw anyone into a funk, a new study has confirmed that pop music is actually more depressing than it ever has been. The study puts this down to consumerist individualism demanding wider choice in all spheres, with the knock-on effect that overwhelmingly happy songs come across as “naïve and slightly juvenile” to today’s sophisticated listener.
Whether the findings cross over to other countries is unclear. Surely pop music can’t be as depressing in South Korea, if this feller is anything to go by…
